WHAT IS SENIOR LIVING?

Senior living refers to a wide range of housing and healthcare options for older adults and includes independent living, assisted living, and memory care to 24-hour care. While the term is mostly synonymous with retirement living, not all senior living residents are completely or even partially retired. In senior living there is an emphasis on safety, accessibility, adaptability, and longevity that many conventional housing options may lack.

Independent living residents seek a maintenance-free lifestyle with the advantages of community amenities. Assisted living residents receive the support they need with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and medication management for a secure, dignified, worry-free lifestyle. Memory care is provided in a secure neighbourhood designed to accommodate the unique requirements of those living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

In assisted living, seniors live in a community environment with friends and staff encouraging participation in social events.

HOW DO WE CHOOSE THE RIGHT COMMUNITY?

Selecting a senior living facility for yourself or a loved one involves asking the right questions. Important questions to ask include:

•   Does the facility have a continuum of care to accommodate changing care requirements without needing to move?
•   Does the facility offer monthly rental units or does it require a buy-in?
•   Are the common areas inviting, welcoming places to gather?
•   What kinds of activities and outings are offered to encourage socialization and healthy living?
•   How’s the food? Is the menu varied? Are menu selections both nutritious and appetizing?
•   Does the facility have adequate trained staff?
•   Does the facility offer trial stay for few days?

Finally, be sure to tour the facility and confirm the answers you’ve been given.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RENTAL COMMUNITY AND A BUY-IN FACILITY?

In a rental retirement facility residents have a monthly payment which includes rent and maintenance, as in addition to, services, and amenities offered within the facility and usually the agreement is for 11 months and renewable thereafter on mutual terms. Buy-in facilities require an up-front financial investment and need not pay monthly rentals and no renewal of agreements.

WHAT ASSESSMENT TAKES PLACE BEFORE A RESIDENT MOVES INTO A FACILITY?

Prior to admission, our residents receive a full and comprehensive care needs assessment. The aim of this assessment is to identify what the individual care needs are and ensure that we are able to meet these needs. There is also a trial period so you can decide if you wish to make this permanent home and we can continue to develop your care plan.

CAN I BRING MY OWN FURNITURE?

Although all rooms are fully furnished, we believe it is important that residents enjoy a feeling of homeliness, so you are encouraged to personalise your room with your own belongings.
